Small samples of naturally tumbled obsidian can be found in a dry wash near the turnoff for the Wellman Beryllium mine. Collecting here is as simple as following the small dry creek bed and keeping a keen eye for the shiny obsidian.
1. Start on I-15 heading south (if coming from Salt Lake City) or north (if coming from St. George) to Exit 228 for Nephi/Main Street.
2. Turn west onto UT-132 W/Main Street and continue for approximately 33 miles to the town of Delta, Utah.
3. In Delta, turn south on US-6/US-50 and continue for about 5 miles.
4. Turn west on UT-257 and continue for approximately 32 miles to the town of Lynndyl.
5. Continue south on UT-257 for another 20 miles to the town of Hinckley.
6. From Hinckley, turn west onto Brush Wellman Road (also known as West 2000 South) and continue for about 36 miles.
7. Turn northwest (right) onto a dirt road marked for Topaz Mountain. Follow this dirt road for approximately 5 milesuntil you reach the GPS location.
Important Notes:
• The final stretch includes dirt roads that may require a high-clearance vehicle, especially after rain.
• No services are available near Topaz Mountain, so bring plenty of water, food, and supplies.
• Cell service may be limited or unavailable, so downloading maps offline is highly recommended.
• A rock hammer, chisel, and protective eyewear are suggested for mineral hunting.
